CSS recognizes 148 color names, such as tomato, cornflowerblue or rebeccapurple. Each one maps to a fixed HEX code and works the same in every browser, with nothing else to define.
They are handy for prototypes, examples and one-off colors because they read better than a code. For a design system with exact, consistent tones, HEX, RGB or OKLCH are still the better choice.
There is some history behind the list, and a few quirks worth knowing.
HTML 4 only defined 16 names, such as navy, teal or olive. The rest came later, inherited from the X11 graphics system colors.
Nine pairs are the same color: gray and grey (and their variants), aqua and cyan, and fuchsia and magenta.
Because of that X11 heritage, darkgray (#A9A9A9) is lighter than gray (#808080). If you want a dark gray, use dimgray.
It was added in 2014 in memory of Rebecca Meyer, daughter of Eric Meyer, one of the leading figures in CSS. It is the only name added in recent years.
tomato, Tomato and TOMATO are the same color. By convention they are written in lowercase.
They are not part of the list, but they are color keywords too: transparent is fully transparent and currentColor uses the element’s text color.
148 names, which map to 139 different colors because there are nine alias pairs (such as gray and grey). They range from basics like red or blue to names like mediumseagreen or rebeccapurple.
Yes, you can write them as they are in any color property, for example color: tomato;, without converting them to HEX or RGB first.
Yes. CSS accepts both spellings for every gray (gray/grey, darkgray/darkgrey…) and they give exactly the same color.
Because the names come from different sources: gray (#808080) is from the original HTML list and darkgray (#A9A9A9) was inherited from the X11 colors, where “gray” was lighter. For a dark gray use dimgray (#696969).
It is the color #663399, added to CSS in 2014 in memory of Rebecca Meyer, daughter of Eric Meyer, one of the leading figures of the CSS community.
No. Tomato, tomato and TOMATO all work, although lowercase is the usual convention.
Yes, they are part of the CSS standard and supported by every current browser.
